Saffron Walden Town advanced after a tense penalty shootout victory over Dereham Town at Aldiss Park in an eventful match marked by multiple red cards and late drama.

The visitors took an early lead in the 17th minute when captain Jordan Gent capitalized on a cross from Jamal Obeng, heading the ball into the net. Dereham responded just before halftime with Thomas Huckerby, son of former Norwich striker Darren Huckerby, scoring to equalize.

The second half remained mostly subdued until the 88th minute when Obeng scored again, finishing off a cut-back from Nathan Woodley to put Saffron Walden back in front. However, the match’s intensity escalated in stoppage time after Olly Miles of Dereham was dismissed. Despite being a player down, Dereham managed to draw level through Louis Simmons, who converted a set-piece for his 12th goal of the season. Shortly after, Huckerby was also sent off following an incident in the wake of the equalizer, leaving both sides reduced to ten men.

The game proceeded to a penalty shootout where Saffron Walden goalkeeper George Coton proved decisive, making four saves to frustrate Dereham’s spot-kick takers. Jack Martin scored the winning penalty, slotting the ball into the top corner to secure the victory for the visitors.

Following the conclusion of the shootout, tensions flared once more, resulting in a scuffle that led to the dismissal of two additional players. The match showcased not only competitive football but also considerable disciplinary challenges, underscoring the high stakes and emotional intensity of the fixture.
