Manchester United have secured what former forward Louis Saha describes as the bargain signing of the summer transfer window by acquiring midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The deal, completed last month for approximately £35 million, came after a proposed £43 million move for Atalanta’s Ederson fell through following a failed medical.
Tielemans, 29, brings considerable Premier League experience to Old Trafford with 244 league appearances. He initially joined Leicester City from Monaco in 2019 and moved to Aston Villa on a free transfer following Leicester’s relegation in 2023. Saha highlighted Tielemans’ long-standing Premier League presence as a factor that kept him "under the radar" despite consistent links to Manchester United over the past two years.
Describing Tielemans as a replacement for Casemiro, Saha praised his experience, World Cup participation, and aggressive style of play, which he sees as necessary attributes for the club’s midfield. He noted Tielemans’ strong positional sense and ball efficiency as key strengths, which reduce possession losses compared to other players. While Tielemans may not offer the same level of creativity as Bruno Fernandes, Saha said he appreciated his mobility and believed that Tielemans' partnership with new signing Andrey Santos, 22, could bring both unpredictability and power to United’s midfield.
Manchester United had been actively searching to strengthen their midfield options. While they successfully signed Santos from Chelsea, the club missed out on other high-profile targets such as Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson. Fernandes joined Tottenham for £85 million, while Anderson moved to Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for a reported £116 million. Another top midfielder, Sandro Tonali, reportedly transferred for around £100 million.
Saha expressed skepticism about the inflated price tags attached to these players, suggesting that Tielemans offers greater value at a significantly lower cost. He emphasized the necessity for players who show dedication and willingness to sacrifice in order to rebuild Manchester United’s legacy, and he views the current midfield setup as critical to that effort.
