Oman Sail’s SailFree programme is entering a new phase aimed at enhancing the development of athletes with disabilities through advanced training and increased competitive opportunities. Launched in 2019, the initiative has introduced hundreds of individuals with physical impairments to sailing, combining sport with social inclusion. The third edition of the programme, supported by bp Oman, marks a shift from basic sailing instruction to a structured pathway designed to develop both technical skills and personal attributes such as confidence, independence, teamwork, and leadership.
The revitalised programme focuses on enabling participants to progress from introductory sessions to more advanced training and competition levels. This approach reflects a broader ambition to use sport as a means to foster equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, allowing them not only to participate but also to demonstrate their skills and pursue representation at regional and international events.
Khamis al Anbouri, Acting Commercial Director of Oman Sail, emphasized that the continuation and expansion of SailFree highlight its success in breaking down barriers and creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities. He noted that the new phase places greater emphasis on both technical skill development and personal growth, aiming not only to cultivate competitive athletes but also to support a more inclusive society by making sailing accessible to all.
bp Oman, a key partner, reaffirmed its commitment to social investment and sustainable community development through its ongoing support of SailFree. The company highlighted the programme’s role in empowering participants and advancing social inclusion via sport.
SailFree has become one of the region’s leading para sailing initiatives, evolving from a basic introduction to the sport into a comprehensive pathway for athletic progression. This development was underscored by Oman Sail’s hosting of the inaugural World Sailing Inclusion Championships at Musannah Sailing School in 2025, which brought together over 100 sailors from across the globe. The event provided many SailFree participants with their first opportunity to compete internationally.
Building on that foundation, the latest phase of SailFree aims to better prepare participants for competition and broaden the range of opportunities available to them. The programme’s goal is to strengthen the presence of inclusive sailing in Oman and enable more athletes with disabilities to reach higher levels of sporting achievement.
