Malaysia’s national sailing team is preparing for challenging conditions as they compete in the upcoming Asian Games sailing events in Aichi-Nagoya, scheduled from September 26 to October 3. Team manager Afendy Abdullah highlighted that unpredictable weather, shifting winds, and varying wave patterns are expected to test the sailors throughout the competition.

To better equip the athletes, the team arrived early at the venue to undergo acclimatisation training. This preparation aims to help sailors quickly adapt to local wind and water conditions, an advantage that Afendy believes is critical for success in the sport's variable environment.

Malaysia’s strongest prospects for gold medals are seen in the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes, where experienced Olympians Khairulnizam Afendy and Nur Shazrin Latif will lead the charge. Nur Shazrin is the defending champion in the women’s ILCA 6 category, having secured gold at the previous Asian Games. Alongside them, former Asian Games competitors Fauzi Kaman Shah and Juni Karimah Noor Jamali add depth and experience to the team.

The national sailing contingent comprises 12 sailors supported by six coaches and the team manager. The delegation is targeting at least one gold medal at the Games. In addition to Nur Shazrin’s previous gold, Malaysia earned bronze medals in the last edition through Asnawi Iqbal Adam in the men’s ILCA 4 and Tengku Nuraini Ezaty Tengku Khairudeen in the women’s RS class.

With a focus on early preparation and leveraging seasoned athletes’ experience, Malaysia aims to navigate the challenging conditions and improve on its medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
