Craig McLeish, recently appointed as the permanent manager of St Mirren, has been drawing on family connections for guidance during his early tenure in management. McLeish, who officially took charge ahead of the 2026 season, is related to former Scotland and Rangers manager Alex McLeish, a figure widely regarded as a prominent name in Scottish football coaching circles.

The familial link comes through their extended family, with McLeish describing Alex McLeish as his father’s second cousin. This connection has provided Craig McLeish with a unique resource, offering access to the experienced former national team manager. Alex McLeish was present at St Mirren’s 2-0 victory over Aberdeen on April 4, where he sat alongside former Aberdeen defender Willie Miller. During this visit, Alex McLeish shared strategic insights and advice with Craig McLeish, who had been serving as interim head coach at the time.

Craig McLeish emphasized the value of this relationship, noting the benefit of having a “hotline” to seasoned managerial expertise. He highlighted his focus on player development, aiming to create an environment for younger players and those in lower leagues to realize their potential. McLeish pointed out that many players’ progress can be hindered by factors such as injuries, circumstances, or the club environment, and expressed a commitment to providing opportunities that players may not have encountered previously.

Reflecting on his own playing career, McLeish revealed that his approach to management is influenced by what he felt was lacking in his experience as a player. He expressed a desire to offer the freedom and support he wished he had, enabling players to maximize their abilities at the first-team level. “I probably didn’t reach the potential I felt I could have as a player,” McLeish said, noting that this drives his ambitions and determination as a coach.

McLeish’s introductory period at St Mirren has thus combined familial mentorship with a personal philosophy centered around nurturing talent, aiming to guide the club’s future performances and player development initiatives.
