Sally Dynevor’s character on the long-running British soap opera continues to navigate some of the show’s most challenging and emotional storylines. Dynevor, who portrays Sally Metcalfe, is currently involved in a plot that sees her trying to support troubled teenager Lucy following the traumatic murder of Lucy’s mother, Rachel, while her father Richie remains incarcerated.
In upcoming episodes, Sally makes a disturbing discovery when she finds a piece of Lucy’s artwork, which depicts a screaming face accompanied by words such as “hate.” The unsettling image prompts a confrontation between the two characters. Lucy, visibly angry, destroys the drawing and blames Sally, even throwing a phone that strikes her in the face. This incident raises concerns about Lucy’s state of mind and causes Sally to question her ability to cope with the situation.
Sally confides in her husband, Tim, about the escalating difficulties she faces while caring for Lucy. Dynevor notes that while Sally initially believes she is managing well, her struggles increasingly reach a breaking point. Furthermore, Lucy’s conflicting statements add to the tension, placing pressure on Sally’s marriage.
This storyline builds on previous dramatic arcs for Sally, including a retelling of her abusive relationship with Greg Kelly in the 1990s. Dynevor described that earlier plotline as poignant, highlighting the impact of domestic abuse on her character’s history.
Outside of her current work, Dynevor reflected on her career and expressed admiration for long-standing colleagues. She cited David Neilson, who plays Roy Cropper, as a personal favorite for his acting and contribution to the series. Dynevor also mentioned the late Pat Phoenix, who portrayed Elsie Tanner, expressing regret that their time on the show did not overlap, as she had admired Phoenix since childhood.
Having received an MBE in 2022, Dynevor remains committed to her role and has expressed a desire to continue with the show as long as her character’s journey allows. Her portrayal of Sally Metcalfe remains central to some of the soap’s most impactful and emotionally driven storylines.
