A 59-year-old Salvadoran migrant, Antonio Melendez Reyes, has been indicted on multiple charges including rape and stalking following an attack on a 16-year-old girl in Huntington earlier this month. According to authorities, the incident occurred on June 6 when Reyes approached the teenager as she was walking home and persistently asked for her phone number. Police report that he then forcibly grabbed her, led her into an alley, and sexually assaulted her.
The victim was able to escape after the assault, despite being partially unclothed, and immediately sought help by calling law enforcement. Police responded promptly and found Reyes still present in the vicinity, reportedly searching for the girl following her escape.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney characterized the allegations as “deeply disturbing,” emphasizing the right of minors to move freely without fear of being targeted or attacked. Reyes faces six charges in total, which include two counts of first-degree rape, one count of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of third-degree rape, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
The case remains under investigation, and Reyes is expected to appear in court to answer to the charges. Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the motive or any prior history related to the suspect.
