Sam Patterson has established himself as a notable finisher in the UFC welterweight division, securing four first-round stoppages among his five victories in the promotion. The 30-year-old fighter from Watford recently extended his finishing streak by defeating veteran Santiago Ponzinibbio in Abu Dhabi last month, overcoming the Argentine opponent in the second round with effective striking.

With a professional record of 5-2 in the UFC, Patterson is positioning himself on the verge of entering the top 15 in the 170-pound category. UFC matchmakers have reportedly begun exploring potential bouts that could provide Patterson with a breakthrough opportunity to climb the divisional rankings.

Patterson adheres to a straightforward approach in his fights, emphasizing the importance of finishing opponents rather than leaving outcomes to the judges. “Everyone likes to see guys that finish fights. It’s not easy at this level, but I have always been a finisher. If I smell blood or I see you’re hurt, I know how to get the job done,” he said. He further explained that he does not personally count decision victories as wins, preferring to leave no doubt about the result by ending fights decisively inside the distance.

Among his two UFC losses, Patterson singled out his points defeat to Michael Page last March at the O2 Arena in London as a particularly unsatisfactory outcome. The bout was marked by cautious tactics, possibly influenced by the fighters’ prior training partnership, leading to a judges’ decision that left Patterson feeling uneasy. “I’ve never been a boring fighter my whole career, so it didn’t sit well with me. Even if my hand was raised that night, I would not have been happy. I don’t believe either of us won and it left a horrible taste in my mouth,” he remarked. Patterson added that he would have preferred a clear loss after an unequivocal contest over an inconclusive decision.

Motivated by the desire to bounce back from that inconclusive defeat, Patterson delivered a commanding performance against Ponzinibbio. Having now amassed five UFC finishes, he intends to maintain his aggressive style moving forward, aiming to continue impressing fans and the organization alike.
