A piglet found abandoned by the roadside just one day after birth has become a cherished resident at a sanctuary in Wolverton, Warwickshire. The Large White pig, named Tom, was rescued and is now thriving under the care of Carole Webb, an 82-year-old former veterinary nurse.
Tom, who is approximately six months old and weighs around 16 stone, was brought to the Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary after being discovered alone. Webb believes the piglet’s mother gave birth during transportation, and Tom likely fell from the trailer. Following his rescue, he was hand-reared at the sanctuary.
Since his arrival, Tom has adapted well to his new environment and enjoys considerable freedom within the sanctuary grounds. He has his own pen and shares space with other animals, including chickens and cats. Webb describes Tom as unusually friendly for a pig, noting his affinity for belly rubs and cuddly toys. She also highlights his sociable nature, stating that he responds to his name and behaves more like a dog than a typical pig.
Tom’s integration into the sanctuary community has generated fond comparisons to the fictional character Babe from the film series, emphasizing his gentle and approachable demeanor. The sanctuary continues to provide Tom with care and companionship, underscoring the success of their efforts to give the piglet a safe and supportive home.
