Sandro Tonali has completed a £100 million move from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur, choosing Spurs over Manchester City following discussions with head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The 26-year-old midfielder signed for an initial fee of £92.5 million, with up to £7.5 million in potential add-ons, as confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday.
Tonali attributed his decision to a lengthy conversation with De Zerbi, during which the coach outlined his vision for the club, the supporters, and the style of football he intends to play. “I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football,” Tonali said. “It was like magic because I knew immediately I had to sign for Tottenham.”
De Zerbi, who was born in Brescia—where Tonali began his professional career—expressed enthusiasm about working with the Italy international. “I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia,” De Zerbi remarked. “Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”
The move represents a significant pay rise for Tonali, who will reportedly earn up to £275,000 per week, roughly double his previous salary at Newcastle. His tenure at Newcastle was marked by a 10-month suspension for violating betting rules shortly after his £55 million transfer from AC Milan in 2023.
Tottenham’s acquisition of Tonali signals the club’s ambition to strengthen its midfield options ahead of the upcoming season, while the midfielder aims to revive his career under De Zerbi’s management.
