Santa Ana police officers are under investigation following an incident on October 1 in which officers were seen using physical force against Florentino Lopez during his arrest. A video circulating on social media shows officers punching and restraining Lopez, who had been smoking marijuana near a school and was later accused of violating probation. The Orange County district attorney’s office has dropped the criminal charges initially filed against Lopez related to this arrest, though he now faces allegations of probation violation.
The footage captures Lopez seated on the hood of a police cruiser with his hands behind his back, engaging verbally with officers before one officer pulls him to the ground and visibly strikes him multiple times. Another officer is shown kneeling on Lopez’s stomach as two additional officers arrive to control the situation and handcuff him. Lopez’s attorney has described the video as evidence of excessive force, asserting that the officers’ actions were unwarranted. The attorney also noted that Lopez plans to challenge the probation violation charges vigorously.
Lopez’s prior record includes multiple offenses such as possession of an unregistered firearm in public, evading a peace officer, reckless driving, and hit-and-run involving property damage. He pleaded guilty earlier in 2026 to carrying an unregistered firearm and had been serving a two-year probation period during which this latest incident occurred. According to Lopez’s legal counsel, one of the officers was aware of Lopez’s probation status at the time of contact.
The incident began when two officers approached Lopez while he was with his younger sister outside their family home. The sister recorded the altercation, which began after the officers summoned Lopez from the front lawn into the street. Lopez was initially charged with resisting arrest, smoking near a school, and pedestrian violations. However, prosecutors later dismissed those charges related to the October arrest and have shifted focus to the probation violation.
In response to the video and public concern, the Santa Ana Police Department launched an internal inquiry and announced plans to appoint an independent investigator to review body-worn camera footage from the incident. The case has garnered significant attention, fueling debates over law enforcement conduct and use-of-force policies in the community.
