A 16-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, rescued a young boy from dangerous waves at Seabright Beach on Saturday, officials said. The boy, approximately 10 years old, was swept into rough surf by multiple large waves, prompting a swift and dramatic rescue.

According to eyewitness Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the incident, the waves overwhelmed the child quickly, catching beachgoers by surprise. Vander Dussen described the situation as alarming, noting that the boy was pulled out to sea in a matter of moments.

The teenage lifeguard immediately entered the water, battling the strong currents to reach the boy and bring him back to shore. Additional assistance came from another lifeguard and several bystanders, who helped carry the child to safety. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the boy on site before reuniting him with his family.

Santa Cruz lifeguards undergo rigorous training, which includes a minimum of 56 hours of lifeguard instruction, 24 hours of medical certification, and over 80 hours in marine safety skills. The city anticipates that hazardous wave conditions will persist through Wednesday, presenting ongoing risks for swimmers and beach visitors.

The video capturing the rescue drew applause on social media, with public figure Eric Trump commending the lifeguard's actions. “Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!” he wrote.

Vander Dussen expressed relief that the outcome was positive, adding that without the prompt intervention of trained lifeguards, the boy’s fate might have been much grimmer.
