Santa Monica and Los Angeles each offer distinctive public aquatic facilities that cater to a diverse range of swimmers, from competitive athletes to families seeking recreational options.
On the campus of Santa Monica College, the Santa Monica Swim Center features two pools designed to meet varying community needs. The main pool is an Olympic-sized, 50-meter by 25-yard fitness pool with 19 short-course swim lanes and 8 long-course lanes. It is equipped with wave-reducing gutters that help maintain calm water conditions even during busy periods. Nearby, a smaller instructional pool measuring the same length and width but consistently about 4.5 feet deep provides space for swim lessons, water aerobics, and family-friendly programming. Admission fees begin at $2 for city residents and $4 for nonresidents, with discounts for seniors and students, as well as family weekend passes and multi-swim packages available. Children under 2 years old are admitted free. The facility operates with a summer schedule and encourages reservations during peak afternoon hours. Additional amenities include family events such as splash nights featuring pool floats and floating obstacle courses, as well as artistic swimming classes in partnership with the Aqualillies, a local water ballet troupe. The center also offers spaces for birthday parties and special events, including the Upper Sun Deck overlooking the pools.
In contrast, the John C. Argue Swim Stadium at the Expo Center in Los Angeles stands as a historic venue originally built for the 1932 Summer Olympics. Although the competition pool is currently closed for renovations, the family recreation pool, also constructed in 1932 and heated for year-round use, remains open to the public. This half-moon-shaped pool measures approximately 40 by 30 meters and features a zero-entry design with a beach-like gradual slope from 0 to 3.5 feet, extending to 4.5 feet in designated lap lanes. Surrounded by palm trees and lounge seating, the pool offers a tranquil setting within Exposition Park. Admission is priced at $1 for children under 18, persons with disabilities, and adults over 50, while adults aged 18 to 49 are charged $4. A Summer Youth Pass is available for $10; all payments are cash only. The pool hosts a variety of programs, including BOGA and AquaFit classes for adults, youth swim teams, and splash ball activities. The complex retains its historic architectural elements, such as Grecian urns and lion’s head fountains, despite updates made in 2003. Parking is free in lots adjacent to the pool, with additional paid options nearby.
Both facilities provide accessible aquatic opportunities, blending fitness, instructional, and recreational uses to serve their local communities. The Santa Monica Swim Center offers a broad spectrum of swim activities with modern features and family programming, while the Expo Center’s John C. Argue Swim Stadium combines historic ambiance with year-round recreational swimming amid upcoming preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
