Sara Cox has been named the new host of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, succeeding Scott Mills following his dismissal amid allegations concerning his personal conduct. The transition is set to take place this summer, as Cox moves from her current role hosting the station’s teatime show.
The BBC confirmed it first became aware of a police investigation into Mills in 2017 related to allegations of sexual abuse. Although no charges were filed at the time, Mills continued in his position. Last month, the broadcaster terminated Mills’s contract, citing a commitment to its “culture and values,” but declined to disclose the new information that triggered the decision.
Scott Mills assumed the breakfast show role in 2025 after Zoe Ball stepped down. Under Mills’s tenure, the breakfast program remained the most popular in the UK. The latest audience figures from Rajar, published in February, indicated that between October and December 2025, the show attracted a weekly audience of 6.47 million listeners, contributing to Radio 2’s status as Britain’s top radio station.
Sara Cox expressed enthusiasm about taking on the new role, describing it as a dream come true and a significant milestone in her broadcasting career. She thanked her current teatime audience and invited them to join her for a morning program promising a blend of music, conversations, and high-profile guests.
The BBC continues to face scrutiny over the handling of the case involving Mills, with calls for greater transparency regarding who within the organization was aware of the allegations and when. The broadcaster's actions follow broader discussions within the media industry about workplace culture and accountability.
