Sarooj Construction Company (SCC) is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of significant contributions to Oman’s infrastructure development since its establishment in 1976. The company underwent a major restructuring in 2006, evolving into its current form with a portfolio valued at over RO 500 million and employing more than 4,000 professionals.
Named after "sarooj," a traditional Omani construction material known for its durability, SCC has grown from initial road and earthworks projects into one of the Sultanate’s leading engineering and construction firms. The company operates across five primary sectors: oil and gas, roads, marine works, civil and building works, and utilities. It is also expanding its capabilities in advanced technologies, such as AI-assisted design, drone surveying, and the use of low-emission vehicles.
Among its notable achievements, Sarooj constructed Oman’s first vehicular tunnel and the country’s first marine lighthouse. Major projects completed by the company include the Musandam Gas Treatment Plant, Musandam Independent Power Project, Nimr Water Treatment Plant, Shinas Port, as well as early infrastructure developments at Al Mouj Muscat and Barr Al Jissah.
Sarooj’s roads division alone boasts nearly 50 years of experience delivering national highways, airport roadworks, and urban road systems throughout Oman. The company continues to maintain a robust project pipeline. Current contracts include the 120-kilometer duplication of the Adam to Thamrait road and the development of the Jabal Shams mountain road. Additionally, SCC is working on the design and construction of the approximate 70-kilometer Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road, connecting Dibba, Lima, and Khasab, with completion targeted for 2027. Another ongoing project involves the main roads, tunnels, and bridges for the fourth development package of Sultan Haitham City.
Beyond construction, Sarooj has invested over RO 125 million in Oman’s In-Country Value (ICV) program, supporting the establishment of new industries, advanced technologies, and manufacturing facilities across regions from Musandam to Salalah. The company has also contributed more than RO 3.5 million to community development initiatives, including scholarships, sponsorships, and a longstanding partnership with the charitable organization Dar Al Atta’a.
Sarooj Construction holds ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications, underscoring its commitment to environmental management and occupational health and safety. The company is also piloting sustainable technologies such as hydrogen fuel cell trucks and solar hybrid power systems at its project sites as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and promote innovation in the construction sector.
