Satellite images have revealed extensive destruction along the Nepal-Tibet border following severe flash floods that struck the Himalayan region on Wednesday. The disaster, triggered by a catastrophic collapse of glacial ice and rock, has obliterated key infrastructure at the Rasuwa-Gadhi crossing, a critical point for traders, tourists, and pilgrims traveling toward Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

Comparisons between pre-disaster and recent satellite photos show complete devastation at the once-busy border facilities, including a basketball court that was present in 2024 imagery but now lies buried under debris. The torrent of water, mud, and rock swept through the area with such sudden intensity that it destroyed roads, buildings, and other installations.

Terrifying footage captured by CCTV showed people fleeing in panic as the landslide engulfed the site, footage that subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms internationally, drawing attention to the scale of the calamity. The affected zone near the border of Tibet’s Gyirong county is believed to be the hardest-hit valley in the disaster region.

Rescue efforts by Chinese search teams commenced on Friday, two days after the floods. A group of 21 rescue workers equipped with a search dog overcame challenging terrain, navigating virgin forests and steep cliffs using ropes to reach the flash floods’ epicenter. The team reported finding “nothing but ruins,” highlighting the complete destruction left in the wake of the flood.

Zou Mingqi, a member of the rescue operation, described the scene upon arrival, emphasizing the impassability of the area and the total absence of roads. The disaster has rendered the major transit route impassable, further complicating relief and recovery efforts.

Authorities continue to assess the situation, with concerns growing over the long-term impact on trade, pilgrimage routes, and local communities in the region. The flash floods underscore the vulnerability of mountainous areas to glacial collapses and raise questions about disaster preparedness amid changing climatic conditions in the Himalayas.
