Despite regional tensions and flight disruptions caused by the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, Saudi Arabia remains a key destination for skilled Filipino workers seeking overseas employment. The Middle East’s unstable security environment has led to temporary suspensions of many job opportunities and airspace closures, yet demand for Filipino professionals in the Kingdom persists.

Following airspace restrictions imposed by most Gulf countries on February 28, 2026, flights carrying overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to the region were suspended, preventing many from traveling. Meanwhile, growing insecurity prompted more than 5,400 Filipinos in the Middle East to seek repatriation, with government efforts facilitating their return.

However, Saudi Arabia has continued to attract a significant number of Filipino workers, particularly in specialized fields such as healthcare. Loreto Soriano, director of the Recruitment Industry Crisis Coordination Council, highlighted a steady demand for highly skilled workers including nurses, stating that candidates remain eager to travel despite the challenges. Soriano emphasized that Filipinos trust firsthand accounts from peers in Saudi Arabia over media reports concerning safety conditions.

One example is registered nurse Krystelle Pace from Sulu, who plans to begin working at Riyadh’s Prince Sultan Military Medical City next week. Pace acknowledged awareness of the regional conflict but expressed confidence in her safety and the Saudi government’s ability to protect its foreign workers. She also cited family ties as a source of reassurance, mentioning relatives already residing in the Kingdom who are reportedly unaffected by the unrest.

Data from the Philippine overseas employment sector indicates that nearly 22 percent of all Filipinos seeking work abroad, which translates to over 480,000 individuals in 2026, selected Saudi Arabia as their destination. This trend is attributed in part to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 program aimed at economic diversification, which has increased job opportunities in various sectors. Additionally, the appeal of tax-free income makes employment in the Kingdom financially beneficial for many Filipinos, enabling them to support their families back home.

While regional conflicts and logistical hurdles have complicated international travel and the movement of workers, Saudi Arabia continues to be viewed by many skilled Filipinos as a stable and promising option for employment in the Middle East.
