Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah International Medical Research Center is set to develop a new specialized laboratory animal facility in Riyadh as part of its efforts to enhance medical research infrastructure in the Kingdom. The center also plans to establish a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory designed to handle certain bacteria and viruses that require stringent containment and safety protocols.

Mohammed Al-Tokhais, research director at the center’s partnerships and collaborations department, said the expansion aims to meet advanced international standards for laboratory animal research. The facility will accommodate studies involving small and medium-sized animals and will be equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support biotechnology research.

The proposed BSL-3 laboratory will allow scientists to safely conduct experiments on infectious agents under tightly controlled conditions, facilitating research into pathogens that pose serious health risks. Al-Tokhais highlighted that these developments align with the center’s broader goal to transfer knowledge and technologies to Saudi Arabia, enhance national expertise, and promote the generation of new scientific discoveries.

Partnership agreements currently in place include programs focused on training Saudi researchers and physicians in advanced techniques not yet available within the country. Once their training abroad is completed, these professionals are expected to advance research efforts domestically, supporting the localization of medical technologies and treatments.

Such collaborations also have the potential to result in patents and scientific publications, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s growing position in medical research. Al-Tokhais noted that medical research typically requires several years to progress from laboratory findings to market-ready products due to rigorous testing and regulatory approval processes designed to ensure public safety.
