King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has significantly advanced in a global ranking of smart hospitals, rising 107 places to 123rd, according to a report released Monday by the Saudi Press Agency. The hospital was also recognized as one of only 15 institutions worldwide to receive two top honors from Newsweek’s World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2027 list.

The ranking, compiled by Newsweek in collaboration with data platform Statista, evaluated 910 hospitals across 33 countries. KFSHRC was distinguished for achieving the highest digital maturity rating—five ribbons—as well as the designation of "Leader in AI Innovation." These dual recognitions highlight the hospital’s progress in incorporating digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) into medical services and research.

Out of the 910 hospitals evaluated, only 21 attained the top digital maturity rating, while 39 earned the AI innovation distinction. Just 15 hospitals, representing fewer than 4 percent of those ranked, received both accolades. To qualify for the AI recognition, hospitals had to place within the top 30 percent on both expert assessments and verified measures of AI implementation.

KFSHRC’s use of predictive analytics and smart systems plays a key role in managing patient flow, supporting clinical decision-making, enhancing operational efficiency, and improving the overall patient experience. The hospital’s AI initiatives align with its broader strategy to provide more precise and patient-centered care.

Since its establishment in 2019, the Center for Healthcare Intelligence at KFSHRC has employed predictive modeling and digital twin technology, allowing surgical teams to virtually rehearse procedures before actual operations. The hospital’s Capacity Command Center has reported over 170,000 interventions since 2021, contributing to a reduction in inpatient wait times from 32 hours to six and a 14 percent decrease in emergency department delays.

KFSHRC also claims a series of medical milestones, including performing the world’s first fully robotic heart and liver transplants. Its AI applications extend into specialties such as oncology, cardiology, and radiology, where tools are used to tailor treatments to individual patients’ needs.

These achievements underscore KFSHRC’s commitment to integrating advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance healthcare delivery in Saudi Arabia.
