Saudi Arabia has played a significant role in international space exploration and education for more than four decades, a legacy that continues to shape the Kingdom’s ambitions in the sector as National Day approaches. The country’s contributions span from pioneering space travel to early support for space-focused higher education and research initiatives.

In a milestone event on June 17, 1985, Prince Sultan bin Salman became the first Arab and Muslim astronaut when he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-51G. His participation marked a notable moment in Saudi Arabia’s space history and established early international ties, including a connection with French astronaut Patrick Baudry, who was also part of the crew.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement extended beyond spaceflight into education. In April 1988, the Saudi Embassy in Washington committed funding to sponsor two students at the inaugural summer program of the International Space University (ISU), held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This funding occurred prior to the official start of the program, indicating Saudi Arabia’s early commitment to advancing space education. The two students, Mohammed Alhomeida and Nasir Abdulhamid Al-Sahhaf, studied Satellite Applications and Space Systems Engineering respectively, joining more than 100 participants representing 21 nations from June to August that year.

Reflecting the Kingdom’s aspirations, Al-Sahhaf highlighted the potential of space technologies for global benefit in a 1988 statement from Boston, expressing a desire for Saudi Arabia to lead developments such as solar power satellites. This early emphasis on leveraging space technology for humanitarian purposes aligns with the country’s ongoing goals to transform national capabilities into contributions that extend beyond its borders.

The following year, three more Saudis—Saleh M. Al-Ghownim, Fahad S. Al-Qurmas, and Omar S. Sheshah—participated in the ISU summer session at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Documentation from NASA and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics confirms Saudi representation in both the 1988 and 1989 programs.

In 1993, Strasbourg was selected from a pool of seven contenders to become the permanent location for the International Space University’s central campus. The institution officially relocated there in 1994, with dedicated facilities inaugurated in September 2002. Saudi Arabia’s early financial support and student participation predated this decision, illustrating its foundational role in the university’s development.

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia aims to build on this enduring heritage by advancing international collaboration in space research and education. Initiatives such as scholarships, scientific partnerships, and sustainable management of orbital environments are viewed as pathways to translating the Kingdom’s space activities into broader societal benefits, both regionally and globally.
