KUALA LUMPUR — The Securities Commission (SC) of Malaysia is considering the creation of a multi-stakeholder task force aimed at enhancing the competency and professionalism of company secretaries in publicly listed companies. The initiative, announced by SC chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi, would bring together regulators and professional bodies to develop a standardized competency framework that reflects the evolving responsibilities of company secretaries.

According to Datuk Mohammad Faiz, the task force's work would complement ongoing efforts to review and improve regulatory requirements. The SC is collaborating with Bursa Malaysia on updating the regulatory framework for company secretaries, focusing on ensuring their suitability for the role as well as strengthening accountability measures.

The move follows feedback obtained during consultations on the upcoming Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance 2026, which is scheduled for release later this year. The SC’s approach aims to address concerns pertaining to the effectiveness and responsibilities of company secretaries in ensuring good governance within Malaysian-listed companies.

The proposed framework is expected to support the professional development of company secretaries and reinforce their role as key contributors to corporate governance. By introducing clearer standards on competency, fit and properness, and accountability, the SC hopes to enhance the overall governance landscape in Malaysia’s capital markets.
