The procedure, which typically takes around nine hours spread over three sessions and costs approximately £2,000 in the UK, has seen a significant rise in popularity in recent years.

Scalp micropigmentation was originally used within the hair transplant industry to conceal scars or improve the appearance of density after transplantation surgery. However, it has evolved into a standalone option for men seeking an alternative to medication or surgical hair restoration. The procedure involves using a specialized tattoo pen fitted with three ultra-fine needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. Patients typically attend an initial session to test the pigment and plan the new hairline, followed by two or more treatment sessions lasting about three hours each. The process is largely painless, requiring no anesthesia, and patients generally report only minor discomfort afterward. Recovery is relatively quick, with a recommended period of two weeks for the pigment to settle, during which patients must avoid getting the scalp wet for seven days. The results can last up to five years before a maintenance session may be needed.

Hair loss affects around 6.5 million men in the UK through various causes, including male pattern baldness—a genetic condition—as well as alopecia areata and stress-related factors. Traditional treatments ranging from medications like finasteride and minoxidil to hair transplant surgery, which costs about £5,000, are not always suitable or effective for everyone. Since undergoing the treatment last April at a London clinic, Hand reports increased confidence and positive reactions from colleagues and family alike. His wife, initially skeptical, now appreciates the results, and his daughter requested the restoration of his original widow’s peak, enhancing the naturalness of the appearance.

The global hair-loss industry generates around £15 billion annually, and experts project continued growth as treatments like scalp micropigmentation gain traction among men seeking effective but less invasive options.
