Cole Anthony made a highly anticipated debut for Melbourne United in the National Basketball League (NBL), delivering an impressive performance in his first competitive game in 207 days. The 26-year-old former NBA player scored 27 points in just 24 minutes, connecting on five three-pointers while also contributing five assists, four rebounds, and three steals in a match against the Cairns Taipans. The game took place at Casey Basketball Stadium in Cranbourne, Melbourne, before an audience of approximately 1,400 fans.
Anthony’s display showcased attributes often associated with NBA-level play, including notable speed, athleticism, anticipation, and basketball IQ. His immediate impact was evident from the opening possession, where he sank a three-pointer within 13 seconds, setting the tone for his team. During the early stages, Anthony accounted directly or indirectly for 11 of Melbourne United’s initial 14 points.
Despite his strong showing, Anthony was candid about his current physical condition, admitting that he was not yet at peak fitness. “This was solid, but I promise you, I’m out of shape,” he told reporters. He said he has been running daily after practice and plans to continue his conditioning work, expressing confidence that his performance will improve as he regains full fitness.
The game marked Anthony’s first significant court time since February 3, when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks in an NBA regular-season game against the Chicago Bulls. In that outing, he scored four points, recorded five assists, and grabbed three rebounds in 12 minutes during a 131-115 victory. Seven months later, his NBL appearance contrasted sharply with his last NBA game in terms of venue and atmosphere, but it nonetheless provided a memorable moment for fans attending the match.
The Cairns Taipans team Anthony faced was described as being “an NBL team in name only,” indicating that their roster or competitive level may have been below typical league standards for this particular game. However, Melbourne United’s fans and teammates appeared energized by Anthony’s return and performance.
Anthony emphasized his commitment to maintaining a high standard in his play as the season progresses. “If I’m going to step out on the court I want to put my best foot forward every time,” he said, acknowledging the role of preparation and confidence in his success. He attributed part of his strong performance to what he termed “basketball gods” being on his side but stressed that extensive work had gone into reaching this moment.
His debut has generated considerable attention around the NBL, with many viewing it as an early indication of the impact Anthony could have in the league once fully fit. Melbourne United will likely look to build on this promising start as their season continues.
