Ride-hailing platforms have introduced various green initiatives to address the environmental impact of millions of daily trips, but user participation in these programs remains limited, according to recent research conducted in Indonesia.
Companies like Gojek and Grab have integrated features promoting electric vehicles, carbon-neutral rides, and carbon-offset programs within their apps to help reduce emissions related to ride-hailing services. Despite their availability, these green options often go unnoticed or unutilized by many users, who may question the actual effectiveness of their contributions or view such features as mere marketing tactics.
The conventional ride-hailing model treats users as passive consumers: they select destinations, pay, and wait for a ride. However, sustainability efforts usually require users to take a more active role, such as opting for lower-emission vehicles, supporting reforestation projects, or engaging in challenges aimed at reducing carbon footprints. Encouraging this level of participation, researchers note, hinges on platforms providing clear and transparent information about the environmental impact of users’ actions.
In a survey of 300 ride-hailing users in Indonesia, researchers found that while trust in green initiatives was generally high, trust alone did not motivate behavioral changes. Users need to see tangible evidence of how their contributions translate into environmental benefits and must connect these initiatives to their personal values and sense of responsibility. Since ride-hailing apps prioritize speed and convenience, conveying detailed environmental data can be challenging. Researchers suggest that platforms could simplify communication by providing regular updates on individual and collective environmental impacts, offering post-trip summaries, and incorporating gamification or incentives to sustain user engagement.
Price sensitivity also plays a role in adoption rates. Allowing users to make voluntary environmental contributions should not replace a company’s fundamental responsibility to operate sustainably. Studies from Malaysia, Vietnam, and China suggest that consumer willingness to participate is influenced by how seriously companies embrace ethical business practices, including reducing empty trips, optimizing algorithms, expanding low-emission vehicle fleets, fairly incentivizing drivers, and maintaining accountability for carbon-neutral programs.
The research emphasizes the importance of ethical corporate conduct in fostering pro-environmental values among users and encouraging their active involvement in sustainability initiatives. Without authentic operational changes and transparent reporting, green features risk being dismissed as superficial add-ons.
Experts argue that achieving sustainability in ride-hailing requires a multifaceted approach involving technology, user participation, and regulatory oversight. Governments and regulators can support this by setting standards for environmental claims in digital platforms, including requirements for calculation, auditing, and disclosure of carbon-neutral status.
Ultimately, meaningful user engagement depends on their ability to perceive the real impact of their choices. Without such clarity, initiatives promoting green ride-hailing may remain symbolic rather than effective tools in reducing urban transportation emissions.
