Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has named a 37-man squad for the upcoming Nations Championship series, which includes a mix of established players and new faces, as the team prepares for their first Test against Ireland on July 4. The selection process has been influenced by ongoing concerns over the fitness and availability of several pivotal inside backs.
Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is expected to retain his role at outside centre (No. 13) for the opening Test. Despite an injury-affected Super Rugby season and limited game time this year, Schmidt expressed confidence in Suaalii’s comfort in the position. The Wallabies’ options for inside centre (No. 12) remain uncertain due to the fitness status of Hunter Paisami and Len Ikitau. Paisami is recovering from an MCL knee injury, while Ikitau is currently playing in the English Premiership final for Exeter Chiefs.
Schmidt indicated that if Paisami is not fully fit or Ikitau is considered too fatigued or not sufficiently integrated into the team's game plan, Queensland’s Isaac Henry or the Brumbies’ David Feilua could be summoned to fill the inside centre spot. “We’ve got two variables with Lenny and Hunter, and we’ve got a lot of time for both of them,” Schmidt noted, adding that the coaching staff would monitor their readiness closely. His initial inclination is to select the fittest player available, with additional options available within the squad to provide cover.
The squad also features new call-ups in Miles Amatosero, Lachlan Shaw, and Declan Meredith, all potentially set to make their Test debuts. Notably absent is Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, who was named in the Super Rugby Pacific team of the season but was omitted partly due to concerns around his lineout jumping ability. This decision has increased the importance of players like Hooper, who could strengthen the forward pack amid the absence of Salakaia-Loto, Nick Frost, and Darcy Swain.
Assistant coach Laurie Fisher suggested that players arriving from club finals, such as Ikitau and Exeter teammate Tom Hooper, might not be ready for selection in the opening match due to limited preparation time. Nevertheless, both have assured coaching staff of their fitness and readiness to compete. France-based Taniela Tupou, currently competing in the Top 14 semi-finals with Racing 92, remains under consideration but may be unavailable if his team progresses to the final.
The Wallabies’ coaching transition will see Les Kiss take over after the three-Test July schedule. He was involved in the current squad selection process alongside Schmidt. With injuries and form still shaping the squad, the coaching staff emphasize building depth and ensuring players are physically prepared to contribute effectively.
Overall, the Wallabies face a period of careful squad management as they balance the demands of international competition with the fitness challenges of key players ahead of their Test opener against Ireland.
