In Solukhumbu district, 508 students from 23 community schools have been awarded scholarships aimed at supporting underprivileged and academically gifted learners, according to officials from the Sherpa Children Assistance Association. The programme was publicly announced on October 29 and targets students in Solududhkunda Municipality, Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality, and Thulung Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality.
The association, which administers the scholarship initiative, seeks to alleviate the financial barriers that prevent children from continuing their education. Santa Bahadur Budhathoki Magar, the programme coordinator, emphasized that the scholarships are intended to ensure regular school attendance and to minimize interruptions caused by economic hardship. Funding for the programme has been provided by Lorens Nepal France and Ryland Loren Nepal Germany.
Chet Bahadur Magar, the headteacher of PK Secondary School, noted that the scholarships have resulted in improved student attendance and eased the financial pressures on families, many of whom face difficulties in affording school-related expenses.
The Sherpa Children Assistance Association also approved scholarships for an additional 40 students for the new fiscal year. Unlike the earlier awards, these scholarships are designed to support students pursuing bachelor's degrees at colleges not only within Solukhumbu but anywhere in Nepal. This broader coverage reflects the programme’s objective to assist disadvantaged students throughout their academic journey, from secondary education through higher education.
By targeting financial obstacles, the initiative aims to reduce dropout rates and provide opportunities for talented students from economically challenged backgrounds. The association’s efforts are part of a broader commitment to improve educational access and outcomes in the Himalayan region.
