The Malaysian Education Ministry has announced a comprehensive review of safety protocols and procedural compliance at schools following the death of a 14-year-old student at a sports school in Kuala Pilah. Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said she has instructed the Inspectorate of Schools to carry out an immediate audit to identify any lapses.
The directive comes amid calls from political leaders for a swift and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Muhammad Idlan Fareeq Shahril, a Form Two student. Muhammad Idlan was found unconscious at the school hostel on Friday and was later pronounced dead at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah.
Fadhlina pledged full cooperation with the police to ensure a thorough investigation, emphasizing that no individual will be shielded if misconduct or legal breaches are discovered. She visited the school to meet with staff, education department officials, and police officers involved in responding to the incident. The minister also met with the victim’s family at the hospital to offer her condolences and confirmed that counselling and psychosocial support have been extended to both the family and the school community affected.
Political leaders have voiced concern and demanded decisive action in response to allegations that Muhammad Idlan was a victim of bullying. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki expressed sorrow over the student’s death and urged an immediate and transparent inquiry, stressing the need for firm measures based on the findings. Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin similarly called for a thorough investigation to serve justice for the student and his family.
Parti Wawasan Negara secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah highlighted the incident as a serious indicator of the broader challenges related to student safety and bullying in schools. He emphasized that educational institutions should provide safe environments and urged the government, particularly the Education Ministry, to take decisive action without delay to prevent further tragedies.
