A 16-year-old from Winder, Georgia, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday for a mass shooting at Apalachee High School that left four dead and nine others injured. Colt Gray pleaded guilty to killing two students and two teachers during the September 2024 attack.

The two students killed were both 14 years old, authorities said. Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm acknowledged that sentencing a juvenile to life without parole is uncommon but cited Gray’s lack of remorse and premeditation as factors in the decision. “Planning, fantasizing about, visualizing and executing a school shooting puts you in a problematic place, it puts you in an unredeemable moral wasteland,” the judge told Gray. “You do not seem to be tormented by what you did.”

In a related case, Colt Gray’s father, Colin Gray, was convicted in March of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for his role in making firearms accessible to his son prior to the shooting. The convictions stemmed from the father’s failure to secure weapons that were later used in the attack.

The sentencing brings closure to a community still recovering from the tragedy that shook Apalachee High School and the surrounding area nearly two years ago. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of firearm safety and responsible ownership in preventing similar incidents.
