More than 120 schools in Kuwait have joined the Fourth Your School Wish Competition, an initiative aimed at encouraging recycling and environmental preservation among students. The competition was launched Thursday at Algiers High School for Girls in Shamiya, with officials from the Ministry of Education and environmental organizations in attendance.

The event took place under the supervision of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. Dr. Reem Al-Fulaij, Minister of State for Development and Sustainability Affairs, and Maryam Al-Enezi, Director General of the Support Educational Services General Department at the Ministry of Education, were present at the launching ceremony.

Sanaa Al-Qamlas, CEO of Umniah, a nonprofit plastic collection company involved in the project, highlighted that the competition’s first waste collection phase is currently underway. She noted steady growth in participation and the volume of collected waste over the previous three years, attributing the progress to increasing enthusiasm among students, school administrations, and educational bodies. The second phase of collection is scheduled for November, with expectations of surpassing previous collection totals.

Al-Qamlas commended the ongoing support from Minister Al-Fulaij and the commitment of those involved. She emphasized that the progress signifies rising environmental awareness across Kuwait’s school communities.

Additionally, Fatima Al-Qamlas, a teacher at Algiers High School for Girls, emphasized the importance of everyday actions in environmental protection. She encouraged fostering recycling habits among students, noting their role as future custodians of the nation. According to Fatima Al-Qamlas, environmental preservation requires cooperation among all members of society and can begin with simple, individual efforts at home, in schools, or workplaces.

The Your School Wish Competition represents a continued effort to integrate sustainability into educational settings and raise awareness about waste reduction among youth in Kuwait.
