Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) has outlined its approach to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the school curriculum, emphasizing a balanced, developmentally appropriate use aimed at enhancing learning without undermining critical thinking and independent effort.

The MOE stresses the importance of nurturing resilience, curiosity, and independent thinking among students as they engage with AI tools. According to the ministry, these qualities are essential to ensure that AI serves as a support system rather than a substitute for the cognitive processes involved in meaningful learning. The introduction of AI in schools is gradual, with younger students initially focusing on print-based materials before AI tools are progressively incorporated as students mature and become more capable of independent use.

Teachers are encouraged to design lessons that align with educational goals, selectively integrating AI when it can best support learning outcomes. There are instances where the use of AI is deliberately withheld to preserve opportunities for productive struggle, which educators regard as key to building deeper understanding, perseverance, and confidence.

The MOE has developed AI-based tools within the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS), which incorporate pedagogical principles and learner-centered safeguards to prevent overreliance. For example, the Learning Assistant feature in SLS requires teacher activation, limits the number of student interactions, and uses prompts to stimulate critical thinking and exploration of multiple perspectives rather than providing straightforward answers.

Recognizing that students have access to commercial AI products beyond the classroom—many of which offer direct answers and limited safety mechanisms—the ministry underscores the need to teach students when restraint in using AI is appropriate. Across subjects, students are trained to critically assess AI-generated information and to employ AI tools purposefully.

The MOE also highlights the role of parents in guiding their children’s AI usage habits and fostering responsible, ethical engagement with these technologies. Parents are encouraged to model intentional AI use, engage in discussions about its responsible application, and prompt their children to reflect on their problem-solving efforts before seeking AI assistance.

Moving forward, the ministry and schools plan to maintain close collaboration with parents and the broader community. Their joint effort aims not only to advance AI literacy but also to cultivate the enduring traits of resilience, curiosity, and independent thought that are vital for lifelong learning and development.
