Puffins undergo a notable physical transformation during the breeding season, characterized by the growth of new flight feathers and the development of a brightly colored, flattened beak with distinct bands. This seasonal change has drawn scientific interest as researchers explore the various possible functions and evolutionary origins of the puffin’s striking beak coloration.

One leading hypothesis suggests that the beak serves as a visual signal of health and reproductive fitness. British author Adam Nicolson has proposed that the vivid beak acts as a “billboard” advertising a bird’s readiness to mate and care for offspring. However, some scientific studies have questioned the strength of the link between a puffin’s physical condition and the intensity of its ornamentation. Ian L. Other theories propose alternative explanations for the puffin’s bright beak. For example, animals often display preferences for shapes and colors associated with their diet—a concept known as “pre-existing bias.” In this context, puffins’ attraction to red hues might stem from their consumption of krill, which often appears in pink or red swarms.
