Engineers at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire recently undertook a complex operation to replace a failed wheel bearing on the Lovell Telescope, a structure that has been a cornerstone of British radio astronomy since its completion in 1957. The 76-meter dish, located about 20 miles south of Manchester, has played a significant role in scientific history, including tracking the Sputnik rocket and studying distant galaxies and star formation. However, the observatory now faces the prospect of closure when government funding ceases in 2028.
The decision to withdraw funding has sparked debate within the scientific community. Professor Brian Cox, a particle physicist and broadcaster at the University of Manchester, described the move as “hasty, ill-considered and devastating.” Similarly, astrophysicist and television presenter George Dransfield criticized the cuts as a risky choice for the future of UK science.
Conversely, some scientists acknowledge the difficult financial decisions facing the government and its main science funder, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Professor James Naismith, a structural biologist at Oxford, emphasized the need to consider trade-offs, suggesting that advocates for ongoing support for Jodrell Bank should clarify which programs would receive less funding as a result. Others privately expressed blunt views on the matter, with one senior life sciences researcher indicating a preference for prioritizing medical research over astronomy.
UKRI has been allocated £38.6 billion over four years, with an increase in its annual budget from £9.22 billion in 2026-27 to nearly £10 billion in 2029-30. Funding for curiosity-driven research is expected to remain largely flat at around £14.5 billion across the period, while there is increased investment in areas aligned with government priorities, including artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, advanced manufacturing, and life sciences. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has highlighted the importance of supporting scientific infrastructure to drive innovation and growth.
Supporters of this strategic shift include Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein, a former government chief scientific adviser, who has called for constructive engagement within the research community rather than resistance to accountability measures.
Despite this, the physics and astronomy sectors are facing funding pressures. The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which oversees much of the funding for these areas, is grappling with constrained budgets that have necessitated difficult choices, including ending support for Jodrell Bank. Similarly, the Boulby Underground Laboratory in North Yorkshire, which conducts dark matter research, will face a 40% cut in its operating budget. Three other major physics laboratories, including the Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire, are collectively required to find £28 million in annual savings.
Paul Howarth, president of the Institute of Physics, criticized these decisions as damaging to the UK’s scientific reputation and a deterrent to future generations entering science careers. In contrast, Stian Westlake, chairman of the Economic and Social Research Council, noted that the overall funding package for physics and astronomy is “good” given current fiscal constraints, though rising costs remain a challenge.
At Jodrell Bank, associate director Professor Simon Garrington highlighted the observatory’s evolving role, noting its use of telescopes to detect satellites and space debris, work with applications in national security and defense. Owned by the University of Manchester, the observatory plans to appeal to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and has called on the prime minister to reconsider the funding cuts. Garrington pointed to a precedent in 2008, when public outcry following a funding crisis led to restored support. While funding levels have increased slightly since then, the rise has not kept pace with inflation.
“We’re fighting,” Garrington said. “We really are hopeful that we will find a way.”
