Scientists have identified nine previously unknown species of deep-sea sponges off the coast of Alaska, expanding understanding of the area’s largely unexplored marine ecosystems. The discoveries emerged from analyses of specimens collected during the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries’ annual bottom-trawl survey, which monitors populations of groundfish and shellfish throughout the region.

The newly described sponge species were identified from samples gathered as early as 2012. Findings were published recently in two separate scientific papers, underscoring the ecological significance of these organisms. Sponges function as natural water filters, continuously drawing in seawater to capture nutrients and particulate matter. They also provide critical habitats for other marine species on the ocean floor, despite lacking brains or complex organ systems.

These developments come amid increasing concerns over the potential impact of deep-sea mining initiatives in Alaskan waters. Under proposals advanced during the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, there has been interest in expanding extraction of critical minerals such as nickel from the seabed. Scientists and environmental advocates caution that such activities could endanger fragile sponge communities that play a key role in maintaining the health and biodiversity of deep-sea ecosystems.

While the full extent of the mining risks remains under study, the recent discoveries highlight the need for careful evaluation of human activities in Alaska’s deep marine environments. The identification of new species underscores how much remains to be understood about these remote habitats, which are essential to broader ocean resilience and productivity.
