Scotland secured a 1-0 victory over Haiti in their opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Saturday in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The only goal of the game came in the 28th minute when John McGinn’s shot deflected off a Haitian defender and slipped past goalkeeper Johny Placide.
This win marked Scotland’s first World Cup appearance since 1998 and their first tournament victory since 1990, when they defeated Sweden 2-1. The result placed Scotland at the top of Group C standings after the day’s earlier match between Brazil and Morocco ended in a 1-1 draw. Brazil and Morocco, regarded as the favorites in the group, both dropped points, giving Scotland an early advantage.
Haiti, making only their second World Cup appearance—having previously qualified in 1974—is still seeking its first point in the tournament. Despite a competitive effort, the Haitian team was unable to capitalize on scoring chances and fell short against the Scots.
The Group C standings remain tight, with several teams vying for advancement in the early stages of the competition. Scotland’s victory will boost their confidence as they prepare for upcoming matches against more experienced opponents in the tournament.
