Scottie Scheffler surged to the top of the leaderboard at the Travelers Championship after carding a second-round 60 on Friday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The 10-under par effort brought his total to 16 under through 36 holes, placing him two strokes ahead of Norway’s Viktor Hovland, who shot a 61 for a 14-under total.

Scheffler narrowly missed a long birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole but managed to tap in for par to complete his bogey-free round. His performance ties the tournament’s best second round, matching rounds of 60 previously recorded by Patrick Cantlay in 2011 and Tommy Bolt in 1954. The event’s single-round scoring record of 58 remains held by Jim Furyk, who set it in 2016, while Cameron Young shot a 59 in the third round two years ago.

Akshay Bhatia and Eric Cole both posted solid rounds—62 and 65, respectively—positioning them in a tie for third place at 12 under. The low scoring on Friday was largely attributed to heavy rain that softened the greens and helped reduce the course’s typical difficulty. Scheffler noted that the conditions were favorable that morning, with less wind and softer playing surfaces compared to the previous afternoon.

“After birdieing 15, I was kind of like, ‘Oh, yeah, maybe 9 under now. A few more, you could shoot 59,’” Scheffler said. “At the end of the day, I was very focused on just my execution out there.… I’ve put myself in position now this week. Go home, get some rest, and get ready for tomorrow.”

The leaderboard remains tightly contested with approaching weekend rounds expected to intensify at the Travelers Championship, a PGA Tour event that has produced low scoring records in recent years. Scheffler’s strong start positions him as the player to beat, while Hovland, Bhatia, Cole, and others aim to close the gap on the final two days of competition.
