A recent study conducted by researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio has found that replacing gas stoves with electric alternatives can significantly reduce asthma symptoms. The research, which tracked air quality and asthma indicators in 85 households before and after switching from gas to electric cooking appliances, showed notable improvements in participants’ respiratory health.
The study focused on levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant commonly emitted by gas hobs, which can exacerbate asthma. After the replacement, participants experienced fewer asthma flare-ups, leading to a decrease in hospital visits and fewer days missed from work. According to the lead investigator, Professor Ash Sehgal, the average participant’s asthma severity improved from moderate to mild following the change in cooking equipment.
One participant, Paul Moore, 37, from Cleveland, Ohio, reported a marked difference in his daily life after switching to an electric stove. He described the improvement in air quality as transformative, comparing the experience to moving from an industrial environment into a more natural setting. Moore specifically noted an increase in his ability to engage in physical activities with his children, such as playing basketball, which he had been unable to do for over ten years due to his asthma.
The findings offer compelling evidence of the health benefits linked to reducing indoor air pollution from gas cooking sources. This research adds to ongoing discussions about indoor air quality and its impact on respiratory conditions, highlighting the potential for relatively simple changes in household appliances to improve public health outcomes.
