Sean McCann is set to represent Scotland in swimming at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking his first senior appearance at the event. The 21-year-old freestyle swimmer, who specializes in long-distance events, expressed excitement about competing on home soil, noting the significance of performing in front of family and local supporters.

McCann, a chemical engineering student at Loughborough University, began swimming competitively at age eight with the encouragement of his mother, Kate. He has developed his technique and endurance through rigorous training at Loughborough’s well-equipped facilities, known for nurturing elite athletes. McCann highlighted the supportive environment at the university, which houses a concentration of top-tier swimmers and coaches, as crucial to his athletic progress.

Born into a family marked by tragedy, McCann is the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared during a family vacation in Portugal in 2007. Sean was just two years old at the time and was asleep in his bed while his older sister went missing. Despite the lasting impact of that event on his family, McCann has focused his energy on swimming, aiming to build a successful sports career alongside his academic pursuits.

Reflecting on his approach to competition, McCann described himself as an underdog at the Commonwealth Games, emphasizing that he does not feel pressured but is determined to perform at his best. “You’ve got to have a strong mentality in distance swimming,” he said, explaining his strategy of pacing himself early in races and building speed gradually.

The 23rd Commonwealth Games were relocated from Australia to Scotland on short notice, providing McCann the opportunity to compete before a home crowd—a chance he recalled watching with interest as a child during the 2014 Glasgow Games. Looking ahead, McCann has set his sights on qualifying for the British Olympic team for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, viewing the Commonwealth Games as an important stepping stone in his athletic development.

With strong family ties in Glasgow and a supportive training base at Loughborough University, McCann is entering the competition with a clear focus and determination to advance his swimming career on the international stage.
