The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has announced an open search for a new Chair of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the agency responsible for safeguarding the United Kingdom against infectious diseases and environmental risks. UKHSA operates as an executive agency within the Department of Health and Social Care.

The appointed Chair will play a crucial role in supporting and challenging the agency’s Chief Executive, working closely with key strategic partners to ensure the board functions effectively. The role requires collaboration with the leadership team to meet agreed objectives, alongside representing the organisation publicly when necessary, in partnership with the Chief Executive.

Candidates are expected to have a strong record of leadership and significant achievement at senior levels across the private, public, or voluntary sectors. An understanding of UKHSA’s role—and that of related stakeholders—in preventing, detecting, and responding to infectious disease threats and other public health risks is essential.

Strong communication skills and sound judgment are also vital, as the Chair will be responsible for leading a prominent national public body, ensuring robust governance and accountability, and fostering the development of executive and board performance.

The position carries an annual remuneration of £21,000, with an expected time commitment of three to four days per month. The length of appointment will be determined by the Secretary of State and may extend up to four years.

Applications are being accepted through the Public Appointments website, with a deadline set for midday on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The Department of Health and Social Care encourages applications from individuals across all backgrounds and regions of the UK, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives to public board governance.
