A former security guard for rapper Drakeo the Ruler testified that he witnessed rapper YG wield a knife during the fatal backstage altercation at the Once Upon a Time in L.A. festival on December 18, 2021. Alrick Cooper III, a member of Drakeo’s security team, described YG as "front and center" in the brawl and one of three individuals carrying improvised knives.

During a deposition, Cooper recounted recognizing YG despite his ski mask, citing distinct hazel eyes and familiar mannerisms. He stated that YG and two others were armed with short, makeshift knives and that he observed slashing motions directed at members of Drakeo’s crew. Although Cooper was not stabbed, he fought against YG and YG’s bodyguard as the group of attackers closed in on Drakeo.

According to Cooper’s testimony, the assailants split into multiple groups and surrounded Drakeo’s party backstage. Security personnel on site closed two gates, effectively trapping Drakeo’s group as the attackers advanced. Cooper also mentioned hearing verbal taunts toward Drakeo, as well as gang-related language during the incident.

The security guard further testified about ongoing tensions between Drakeo and YG prior to the festival, pointing to previous confrontations near recording studios and music releases that suggested escalating animosity. Cooper said he had warned Drakeo ahead of the event about the need for heightened security measures.

Drakeo’s family has since filed a lawsuit against the festival organizers and security contractors, alleging inadequate protection that contributed to the rapper’s death. YG has denied any involvement in the stabbing. Authorities conducted a search of a Burbank property linked to the investigation and briefly detained YG; however, he was subsequently released. The investigation remains active, with no arrests announced to date.
