In a revealing account of early multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms, a young woman’s experience highlights the importance of recognizing vision changes as potential warning signs of the disease. Sasha Clark, a 28-year-old charity worker from Essex, began experiencing sudden visual disturbances in January 2018 when she found her eyesight blurred unless she closed one eye. Initially attributing the symptoms to a migraine, Clark’s condition rapidly deteriorated over the following weeks, with worsening coordination, balance issues, severe fatigue, and difficulty performing basic tasks such as eating and bathing. Two months later, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

MS is an autoimmune disorder that damages myelin, the protective coating around nerves, particularly affecting the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This damage disrupts communication between the eyes and brain, often resulting in various vision problems. A recent Canadian study noted that visits to neurology and ophthalmology specialists tend to increase eight to nine years before an official MS diagnosis, underscoring the extended preclinical period of the disease.

Dr. Aravinthan Varatharaj, a clinical academic neurologist at the University of Southampton, emphasized that while common MS symptoms like mobility difficulties and bladder problems are widely recognized, fewer people are aware of its early visual manifestations. Damage to the optic nerves can cause optic neuritis, an inflammation that develops over several days and may present with eye pain, blurred vision, blind spots, washed-out colors, and flashing lights. Although optic neuritis often subsides within weeks without intervention, it can be an early indicator of MS and warrants prompt examination by an optician, who can detect nerve fiber damage in the eye.

Other conditions, such as infections or autoimmune diseases like lupus, can also inflame the optic nerve, making differential diagnosis essential. Dr. Varatharaj noted that optic neuritis might represent the first episode of MS, even if initial symptoms improve spontaneously.

The MS Society UK is supporting research aimed at better understanding the early phase of the disease. Dr. Catherine Godbold, senior research communications manager at the organization, highlighted ongoing efforts at King’s College London to identify individuals at higher risk by analyzing symptom patterns and other data prior to formal MS diagnosis.

Beyond optic neuritis, MS can impair nerve pathways that control eye movement, leading to symptoms such as double vision, difficulty reading, distorted or overlapping images, and oscillopsia—a condition where visual surroundings appear to bounce during movement. These visual disturbances often correlate with additional symptoms affecting balance, coordination, and nausea. Timely treatment can help alleviate these manifestations and improve outcomes.

Clark advises those experiencing unusual vision changes or other early symptoms to advocate for thorough investigation. “Be quite firm with your GP—if you feel like something’s not right, listen to your body and keep investigating,” she said. Her case underscores that MS does not always begin with obvious mobility issues, and early recognition of visual or fine motor symptoms is crucial for earlier diagnosis and management.
