American singer and actress Selena Gomez has revealed that her past vaping habit has caused permanent changes to her voice, prompting her to publicly announce that she has quit. In an Instagram story shared on October 18, the 34-year-old admitted to frequently vaping nicotine and warned others about the potential risks.
Gomez described the alteration to her voice as irreversible, stating, "I'm not going to be able to change my voice," and cautioned those experimenting with vaping that it “is just not worth it.” She attributed the changes to "throat swells," a condition she previously discussed in a 2025 Instagram Live session, which led to a noticeable drop in the pitch of both her speaking and singing voice. Aware of the public's reaction to her transformed vocal tone, Gomez expressed understanding for those who may no longer want to listen but encouraged people to be supportive regardless.
Encouraging others facing similar struggles, Gomez emphasized the difficulty of quitting but urged persistence, saying, "I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope I can keep it up. It's really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too."
The singer’s candid admission has sparked widespread discussion on social media, where fans praised her honesty and vulnerability. Medical professionals have also weighed in, highlighting that regular exposure to e-cigarettes can lead to various health problems, a stance consistent with current health research.
Gomez has been open about her ongoing health battles throughout her career. She was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease, in 2013, which necessitated chemotherapy and a kidney transplant in 2017. In 2020, she revealed a bipolar disorder diagnosis and has spoken publicly about her struggles with anxiety and depression.
Married since September 2025 to American music producer Benny Blanco, Gomez began her career as a child star on the television series Barney & Friends and later gained prominence on Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place. As a recording artist, she has released several notable hits, including "Come & Get It," "Good For You," and "Lose You To Love Me."
Currently, she stars in the mystery comedy-drama series Only Murders In The Building and is set to voice lead roles in two upcoming animated films slated for release in 2027: the science-fiction comedy Not Alone and The Hunting Of Hotel Transylvania, the fifth installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise.
