A wildlife mural now decorates the front of a home in Treharris, South Wales, after local resident Wyndham Stokes commissioned a unique artwork to transform the facade of his semi-detached house. Stokes, 59, who has lived in the property since birth, sought to create something distinctive and enlisted local mural artist Matt Dey for the project, giving him full creative control while requesting the inclusion of a red kite silhouette as a nod to local wildlife.

Dey, 51, spent five days completing the mural, employing spray cans and acrylic paint to depict a variety of animals significant to the area, including a robin, blue tit, and a rabbit, alongside the red kite positioned prominently in the upper right corner. The artist worked from a ladder, overcoming a personal fear of heights, while drawing a steady flow of observers from the neighbourhood.

“The whole village was looking,” Dey said, describing the experience as painting “in a goldfish bowl,” where the work had to meet close scrutiny from a community eager to see the transformation. Stokes noted that the mural has attracted passing motorists stopping to view the artwork and that he enjoys sitting in his front garden to admire the vivid scene.

Encouraged by the positive response, Stokes has since asked Dey to extend the mural to cover the remainder of the house. The additional painting is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, further enhancing the home’s connection to the natural surroundings and the local community’s appreciation of wildlife art.
