A Republican senator has called for a Senate investigation into Donald Trump Jr.’s recent Bahamas wedding, which has come under scrutiny due to financial involvement from a Russian oligarch. Senator John Curtis sent a letter to the leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, requesting subpoenas related to Trump Jr.’s business activities, foreign connections, received gifts, and any instances where his relationship with former President Donald Trump may have been leveraged for benefit.
Curtis highlighted the use of subpoena powers during inquiries into Hunter Biden’s foreign dealings and argued that similar scrutiny should apply to Trump Jr.’s wedding. “A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else,” Curtis wrote in a social media statement accompanying his letter. He emphasized that Republicans had vigorously pursued investigations into the president’s son and should not discontinue such efforts when it comes to Trump’s own family.
According to reporting by ProPublica, Umar Kremlev, a Russian boxing official with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, contributed to covering expenses for the wedding reception on a private island and a fireworks display. The event took place in May and celebrated the marriage of Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson. Anderson later referred to Kremlev on social media as a “dear friend” who hosted two nights of post-wedding festivities.
Donald Trump, who did not attend the wedding, defended the involvement of Kremlev, stating that Trump Jr. informed him the money would be reimbursed. He added that gifting a wedding party is “totally allowed.” Trump Jr. was notably involved in the special counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller after the 2016 presidential election, following revelations that he attended a meeting in Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer offering potentially damaging information about Hillary Clinton.
Senator Curtis, elected to the Senate earlier this year, has positioned himself as willing to challenge Trump when necessary. His demand for investigation into Trump Jr. coincides with broader Republican concerns about the former president’s influence as the party navigates challenges ahead of the November midterm elections, including issues related to the war in Iran and rising fuel prices.
