Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican lawmaker from Kentucky and former Senate majority leader, was admitted to a hospital Sunday, according to a statement from his spokesperson, David Popp. While the statement confirmed that McConnell is receiving care, it provided no details regarding the reason for his hospitalization or his current condition. It was also unclear where McConnell was hospitalized.
McConnell, 84, has faced ongoing health challenges in recent years that have drawn public attention. Notably, he suffered a fall in December 2024 that resulted in a sprained wrist and minor facial injuries. In March 2023, McConnell sustained a concussion and broken rib after falling at a hotel in Washington, causing him to miss nearly six weeks of Senate sessions. Additionally, he experienced other falls, including incidents in 2019 at his Kentucky home and during trips to Helsinki and Reagan National Airport in 2023. That year, he also exhibited episodes during public appearances where he froze momentarily and required assistance.
The senator’s mobility has been affected in part by polio contracted in early childhood, and he has acknowledged difficulties with walking and climbing stairs. He has occasionally used a wheelchair within the Capitol and is typically accompanied by his security detail.
McConnell, who was first elected to the Senate in 1984, served as both majority and minority leader from 2007 until stepping down from his leadership role in 2024. He announced in 2025 that he would not seek re-election, and his current Senate term is set to end in January 2027. Throughout his tenure, McConnell was known for his strategic influence on conservative judicial appointments and fiscal policy.
Despite his health concerns, McConnell has remained active in Senate duties, including chairing public hearings as chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense and participating regularly in legislative sessions. No further updates on his health or prognosis have been provided as of now.
