Three senior citizens from Changlun, Kedah, continue to make significant contributions to their community, driven by a strong sense of civic duty despite their advancing age.

Retired teacher Zainol Abidin Mohamad, 68, who is affectionately known as Cikgu Non, has dedicated much of his post-retirement life to supporting education for underprivileged students. He frequently offers additional lessons in Mathematics and provides cash incentives to encourage academic excellence among young learners facing financial difficulties. Zainol Abidin emphasized that his efforts stem from a commitment to ensuring that every child receives the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their economic background.

In one notable instance, Zainol Abidin spent nearly RM40,000 to reward students achieving outstanding results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. He recounted promising RM3,000 to any student in struggling classes who scored seven As or more. Thirteen students met this target, surpassing expectations and securing the incentives. Many of these students have since gone on to pursue successful careers. Despite the financial burden, Zainol Abidin said he never regretted the expenditure, finding fulfillment in motivating young people to strive for a better future.

Joining him in community service are Shoberi Hashim, 70, and his close friend Fadilah Abdullah, 72. Both men spent decades in the public sector before choosing to remain active in retirement by engaging in charitable work. They are involved in managing a shelter for individuals requiring care and assistance, as well as participating in various activities organized by non-governmental organizations.

Shoberi reflected that as long as they retain the physical ability, they feel a moral obligation to continue contributing their time and effort. He also expressed gratitude for his health, which allows him to remain engaged in volunteerism. Fadilah echoed these sentiments, stressing that their motivation is rooted in a genuine desire to serve others rather than seeking material rewards or social recognition. Both men plan to maintain their community involvement for as long as they remain capable.

Together, these three individuals exemplify a commitment to public service and social responsibility, demonstrating that age has not diminished their dedication to enhancing the lives of those around them in Kedah.
