Serena Williams is preparing for a return to Grand Slam tennis this month, with practice sessions underway at Wimbledon’s Aorangi Park courts. The 44-year-old, who has been away from competitive play for nearly four years, received a wild card entry into the women’s doubles draw alongside her sister Venus Williams. The pair previously won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, the last of which was at Wimbledon a decade ago, and have not competed as a team since 2022.
Williams began her comeback at the Queen’s Club tournament, where she won her first match in doubles alongside Canadian partner Victoria Mboko. However, their run was cut short due to Mboko sustaining an injury. Shortly after, Williams competed at the WTA Tour event in Berlin with Karolina Muchova but suffered a first-round loss.
In a social media post shared on Instagram, Williams was seen practicing at Wimbledon with her daughters, Olympia and Adira, in attendance. Olympia, aged eight, was shown hitting forehands during the session as Williams appeared relaxed and focused. The Williams sisters are set to return to competitive doubles at Wimbledon, marking a notable moment in Serena’s ongoing efforts to re-enter professional tennis.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Londoner Hannah Klugman, who has also been awarded a wild card into Wimbledon, recently competed at the Lexus Nottingham Open. Klugman secured her first WTA Tour victory by defeating fellow British player Harriet Dart but was eliminated in the second round, losing 7-5, 6-2 to Czech player Marie Bouzkova. Despite having opportunities in the opening set, Klugman struggled with nine double faults, and the fourth-seeded Bouzkova, ranked significantly higher, advanced to the quarterfinals. Klugman’s performance in Nottingham is expected to improve her ranking, potentially bringing her just outside the world’s top 400.
Both Williams’s and Klugman’s participation at Wimbledon highlights the mix of experience and emerging talent in the tournament as the tennis season progresses.
