Serena Williams is set to make her return to Wimbledon singles competition after nearly four years, facing 20-year-old Maya Joint in the tournament’s first round. The match will mark Williams’ first singles appearance since her 2022 U.S. Open third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic.

Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, accepted a wild-card entry for the grass-court Grand Slam event. At 44 years old, she will also compete in doubles alongside her older sister Venus Williams, who turned 46 last week. This Wimbledon campaign follows an initial comeback phase featuring two doubles warmup matches.

Joint, who was born in Michigan like Williams, represents Australia through her father. Currently ranked No. 53, she made her Wimbledon debut last year but was eliminated in the first round by Liudmila Samsonova. Joint’s notable achievements include winning the Eastbourne Open on grass in 2025, one of her two WTA tour-level singles titles. However, her momentum was somewhat hindered earlier in 2026 due to a back injury.

Reflecting on the upcoming match, Joint described it as an honor and expressed her excitement at facing a player she has admired for years. “If you told me 10 years ago that I’d be playing her first round at Wimbledon, that’s just crazy,” she said. She added that she hopes to play on Centre Court but intends to focus on each ball rather than the stature of her opponent to manage nerves.

Williams had previously indicated a gradual transition away from professional tennis after her 2022 U.S. Open exit, opting to describe her shift as “evolving” rather than retiring. She welcomed her second daughter in 2023, which contributed to her time away from the sport.

Ajla Tomljanovic, who defeated Williams in the 2022 tournament and is Australian like Joint, commented on the significance of the matchup. She said she hopes Joint "enjoys the moment" given the rarity of competing against Williams, who had officially stepped away from singles competition.

The first-round singles matches for Wimbledon were finalized with Friday’s draw, setting the stage for what could be a compelling showdown between the veteran champion and the rising talent early in the tournament at the All England Club.
