Gold Coast Titans rookie winger Jensen Taumoepeau has been ruled out for the remainder of the NRL season following a severe ankle injury sustained during Saturday night's match against the Penrith Panthers at Cbus Super Stadium.
In what was just his sixth first-grade game, Taumoepeau dislocated his left ankle in the 73rd minute after an awkward landing during an aerial contest with Panthers player Tom Jenkins. The forward was immediately attended to on the field, remaining in visible distress for several minutes before being transported off the field by paramedics via medicab while using a pain-relief device known as a green whistle.
Coaches and medical staff confirmed the injury did not involve a compound dislocation or fracture. Taumoepeau was scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday, which coincided with his 26th birthday. Recovery is expected to take approximately three months, effectively ending his season.
Titans coach Josh Hannay described the injury as "pretty significant," acknowledging the setback for the young player. “The poor young guy will be out for a while,” Hannay said, highlighting the impact on the team’s lineup.
The Titans narrowly secured a 19-18 victory over the Panthers in a closely contested match, but will now face the challenge of filling the void left by Taumoepeau’s absence for the remainder of the season.
