Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko has withdrawn from the national team’s upcoming UEFA Nations League matches due to ongoing shin pain, according to head coach Bostjan Cesar. The Manchester United striker was initially called up for Slovenia’s fixtures against Scotland, North Macedonia, and Switzerland but pulled out to focus on his recovery.
Sesko’s injury troubles date back to May, when he was forced off during Manchester United’s Premier League win over Liverpool, causing him to miss the club’s pre-season preparations. Although United manager Michael Carrick adopted a cautious approach to his return, Sesko started in the recent Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton, only to be substituted in the 66th minute. He did not travel with United for the subsequent league match at Fulham due to persistent shin issues.
On Monday, Sesko took to Instagram to express his regret at missing the national team’s upcoming games. He emphasized his commitment to Slovenia and said his priority is to focus fully on rehabilitation. “I am already working on getting back on the pitch as soon as possible to help both the national team and my club once again,” he wrote. He also conveyed his support for his teammates, stating he is eager to represent Slovenia again once fully fit.
Sesko’s last appearance for Slovenia came in October 2022 during a World Cup qualifying match against Switzerland. Speaking to local media, coach Cesar described the player’s current phase as “a difficult period” and expressed sympathy given that Sesko has rarely encountered injuries before. He noted the unusual nature of the shin injury and underscored the need for patience and thorough rehabilitation.
“This isn’t an easy time for Benjamin,” Cesar said. “He needs to surround himself with people he trusts and believes in, and for everyone around him to remain positive. He needs time, he needs good rehabilitation — and Slovenia needs him too, once he is fully healthy.”
Sesko was recently evaluated at Manchester United’s training facility in Carrington, where medical staff designed an individualized recovery plan. The forward is expected to continue his rehabilitation in hopes of being fit for United’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on October 10.
