Muscat hosted the second session of the “Future Dialogues” programme organized by Oman’s Ministry of Economy through its National Foresight Office, focusing on the evolving dynamics of global energy markets. The event, held on October 29, brought together government officials, private sector leaders, and international experts to examine current and projected shifts in energy supply, demand, and related geopolitical and technological factors.
The session aimed to enhance understanding of the broad transformations shaping energy markets worldwide and their potential impacts on Oman’s economy. It emphasized the importance of foresight tools to support strategic planning, policymaking, and investment decisions, allowing stakeholders to better anticipate and prepare for changes in the sector.
Discussions centered around three primary pathways addressing different aspects of energy security. The first pathway considered the role of economic growth and productivity improvements, particularly in light of advancements in artificial intelligence technologies that are increasingly influencing the energy landscape. The second pathway focused on resource security concerns, highlighting the growing significance of national interests and border protections in a world marked by geopolitical fragmentation. The third pathway explored the challenges and requirements involved in achieving long-term environmental security, including Oman’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
The session also reviewed four key pillars underpinning energy security: ensuring access to energy, maintaining supply reliability, building resilience and the capacity to recover from disruptions, and adapting proactively to future developments. These pillars were presented as essential components for countries and companies navigating the uncertainties of the global energy transition.
By providing a forum for dialogue among diverse stakeholders, the event sought to link future-oriented knowledge with practical policy and economic priorities. This approach aims to support Oman’s efforts to position itself strategically amid ongoing shifts in global energy markets and to strengthen its national energy security in the years ahead.
